The Symposium will take place over two days.
The first day, on September 6th, the Tel Aviv University will host at the Gilman Humanities Building the 'Conference of the Heads of the Italian Archaeological Missions in Israel'.
The second day, September 7th, the Crusader Citadel in Acre will host the scientific seminar entitled "Italy and Israel: routes, trade, connections".
The Symposium aims at strengthening existing ties between Italy and Israel in the field of archaeology with a view to explore options for increased collaboration, ranging from students mobility and joint research teams to the authorization of new Italian archaeological missions in the Country.
The Symposium aims at strengthening the existing ties between Italy and Israel in the field of archaeology with a view to explore options for increased collaboration, ranging from students mobility to joint research teams to the establishment and authorization of new Italian archaeological missions in the Country.
To date, the Italian MFA officially supports three missions, i.e. Prof. Lemorini (Qesem Cave, Revadim Quarry e Jaljulia), Prof. Luschi ('Askgate' in Ashkelon), and from 2010 to 2018 Prof. Benente (the Genoan remains in Acres) team. The first day in Tel Aviv will provide for joint presentations of the Heads of Italian archaeological missions (with their local partners) describing the outcomes of their campaigns (the presentations will be published on an electronic book of the missions). A panel debate will follow exploring possible paths to improve collaboration.
The second day in Acre will be opened by a 'lectio magistralis' of Prof. Cardini, one of the most important middle age historian in the Italian Academy. The first round of speeches will elaborate on "Routes, trade, connections between Italy and Israel" depicting the strict ties existing throughout history between our two lands (well symbolized by the same city of Acre). A second round of speeches will provide an overview of the existing Italian-Israeli collaborations not included in those supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, most of which are based on the exchange of technologies and technological services for archaeology. A 'young ancient aperitif' will host Italian researchers and 'startuppers' in the Country.
A visit to the 'Italian places of Acre' (the Genoese and Pisan places, the churches of San Giovanni and Sant'Andrea) and to the Restoration Institute of Acre 'Città di Roma', together with further activities, are also planned. The Institute, an excellence example of Italian-Israeli collaboration, was damaged in May 2021. The aim is to raise public awareness for its reconstruction.
